Before that, he spent two years as a special government employee with the Defense Department. Earlier, he was a research consultant at the U.S. Agency for International Development. He also was the special assistant for Asian Affairs at the Net Assessment Office of the Secretary of Defense, a U.S. Senate staff coordinator for the Congressional Task Force on Afghanistan, and an assistant undersecretary of defense for policy planning. He has held faculty positions at the University of CaliforniaâLos Angeles, the University of Southern California and Georgetown University.
He received his B.A. in history from Stanford University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
