Mr. Riggins is a former football running back in the National Football League, who played for the New York Jets and Washington Redskins. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
He was drafted by the Jets in the first round of the 1971 NFL Draft. After four years with the Jets, he signed as a free agent with the Redskins for a four-year contract. During Super Bowl XVII, he was named Most Valuable Player after setting the then-Super Bowl record of 166 yards on 38 carries.
He retired after the 1984 season. Later, he worked as an actor on off-off-Broadway productions and in TV shows and also was a sports commentator on TV and radio.
He majored in journalism at the University of Kansas, where he was an All-American and two-time All Big Eight Conference first-team selection.
