He received his bachelor of science degree from James Madison University (1992), his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Cornell University (1996), and his master's of science degree in clinical sciences from Colorado State University. He completed his internship in medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego (1997) and his three-year residency in small animal internal medicine at Colorado State University (2000).
