Karl Herzfeld was a professor and head of the physics department at Catholic University of America in 1947 when he owned this house. He gained the school respect for his work on the electronic structure of polyatomic molecules in the late 40's. In 1958 Herzfeld was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1960. Herzfeld passed away in 1978.
