United States Secretary of State (Truman Administration) Dean Acheson owned this house. He developed anti-communist views early in his political career, but defended state department employees accused during Senator (Wisconsin) Joseph McCarthy's hearings in the 1950's. Acheson played a vital role in devising both the Truman Doctrine and the European Recovery Program (ERP). He later counseled President Lyndon B. Johnson to negotiate for peace in Vietnam. Acheson passed away in 1971.
