Secretary of State (1959 to 1961) Christian Herter owned this house when he passed away in 1966. He was governor of Massachusetts from 1953 to 1957 and the first United States Trade representative (1962 to 1966). The liberal Republican feared the limitations of big government while having a zeal for international partnership and aid.
