Pharmacologist, Dr. Frances Kelsey, owns this house. She is credited with preventing untold numbers of birth defects by her decision to not allow thalidomide in the United States. Thalidomide, a sedative and multiple myeloma medication, was widely prescribed in Europe. Dr. Kelsey faced aggressive lobbying and attacks claiming she was responsible for not allowing a beneficial drug to the public. More than 10,000 cases of birth defects were eventually attributed to thalidomide use in Europe. Dr. Kelsey received the President's Award for Distinguished Service from President John F. Kennedy in 1962 and in 2000 was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
