Pioneering U.S. Senator grew up in this house

Former U.S. Senator from Massachusetts Edward Brooke III grew up in this house. He was the first African-American elected to the United States Senate by popular vote. Brooke III served from 1967 until Paul Tsongas defeated him in 1979. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.
