The D.C. area housing market is a bright spot in the country

While the rest of the country is struggling in the housing market, most of the DC area continues to hold strong.

In the rest of the country, home prices have reached the lowest level since 2006.

"Not only is Washington's economy stronger, but we are at a further point along in the cycle of the recovery from the recession," says John McClain, a senior fellow at George Mason University.

He says that prices in most of Northern Virginia, D.C., and in Montgomery County have gone up for 18 months. Seattle is the only other market in the county where housing prices held steady from February to March.

McClain says that most other metropolitan areas have just "turned the corner" in starting to grow jobs.

However, he says there are some exceptions in the area, like Prince George's County.

"That's where we've had more foreclosures to deal with."

McClain adds that Charles County in Maryland, and Spotsylvania and Stafford counties in Virginia are also exceptions to the growth seen in the rest of the area.
