William Holmes was the head curator of the anthropology collection at the National Museum in 1915 when he owned this house. He was an anthropologist, archaeologist, and geologist. In 1889 he was an archaeologist with the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology. In 1920 Holmes became director of the National Gallery of Art (Smithsonian American Art Museum). He passed away in 1933.
