First black person to perform at the Metropolitan lived in this building

Ballerina Janet Collins lived in this building in 1967. She was prima ballerina of the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in the 1950s and the first black artist to perform there. Collins danced with and appeared in dance legend Katherine Dunham's 1943 film classic "Stormy Weather." She made her Metropolitan debut in 1951 and performed there as prima ballerina until 1954. Collins passsed away in 2003.
