Always looking to make travel easier, Fox Travel, an American Express Representative, explains the new precheck application process through Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
On Dec. 3, the TSA announced the launch of an enrollment process for its popular "PreCheck" airport screening program, including the establishment of the first enrollment site at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) and a pre-enrollment application via http://www.tsa.gov/.
U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents will now be able to apply for "PreCheck" online and visit an enrollment site to be interviewed and provide identification and fingerprints. By the end of the year, TSA expects to open application centers in the New York City area, the Washington, D.C. metro area and the Los Angeles area. It ultimately plans to expand to more than 300 application centers across the country.
The application program requires a background check, fingerprints and an enrollment fee of $85 for a five-year membership. Once approved, travelers will receive a Known Traveler Number and the opportunity to go through "PreCheck" lanes at security checkpoints at participating airports. Previously, travelers had to opt-in through participating airline's frequent flier program, or be enrolled in one of Customs and Border Protection's Trusted Traveler programs. Those avenues will still be available.
PreCheck allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belts, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on in select screening lanes.
