He came to Chicago from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he served in various executive positions for the school's Family Health Center, including a most recent role as the center's director. He was also a professor at the school. He specializes in family medicine, including obstetrics and impatient care.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine (1979) and his bachelor's from the University of Kansas ('74).
