Guard Your Home From Fire Carbon Dioxide Emissions

"Some laws make more sense than others -- and those mandating smoke and carbon monoxide detectors would seem to fall into the ultra-sensible category. Yet, as virtually every Realtor and home inspector will tell you, property owners frequently break these laws.

The offenses are usually unintentional, and fortunately, the problem is easily remedied by appropriate installation of approved detectors. But it's still important to note that noncompliance is actually a misdemeanor in Illinois. Additionally, liability issues can be immense if a fire damages a noncompliant home or building, or an undetected gas leak causes injury. And, of course, no price tag can ever be attached the personal pain of such accidents.

In recent weeks, Chicagoland has witnessed several heartbreaking stories of families whose homes have been damaged or lost to fire, or whose loved ones have been harmed by fire or deadly C02 emissions. In some cases, no detectors were present or operational. Hopefully, a refresher course on the laws will inspire all of us to reassess our home's safety -- and make sure state-mandated detectors are in place and operating properly."
