LIBERTYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL POSTS NEWLY RELEASED ACT SCORES

Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 officials are celebrating newly released ACT scores from the Class of 2010.

Libertyville High School students set a new school record with a 25.3 composite score on the college entrance exam, out of a possible 36.

And students at Vernon Hills High averaged a 24.7 composite score, the same as the school's average a year before.

Both composite scores are well above the state average of 20.7 and the national average of 21.0.

"We are ecstatic about the continued success of our students on the ACT," District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea said. "The focused efforts of our teachers, students and our community continue to yield significant annual increases in student achievement."

The ACT includes a multiple-choice section covering math, English, reading and science. An optional writing section measures skill in planning and essay composition.

According to the district, 473 graduating seniors at Libertyville took the ACT last school year, and 288 took the test at Vernon Hills. Juniors take the test as part of the Prairie State Achievement Examination, too.

The scores students receive the last time they take the test are the ones that count.

At Libertyville, the students averaged 25.3 in English, 25.1 in math, 25.6 in reading and 24.6 in science.

At Vernon Hills, the students scored 24.6 in English, 25.3 in math, 24.4 in reading and 23.8 in science.

The state averages were 20.3 in English, 20.7 in math, 20.8 in reading and 20.5 in science.

"We believe the curriculum initiatives that we have undertaken have a positive impact on student achievement," said Deborah Larson, the district's assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. "We're proud of our students and their desire to learn and perform well on this assessment."
