Lovie Smith paid $1.625 million for this home in December 2004, the year the Bears hired him as their head coach. He was previously the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. During Smith's first three seasons with the Bears the team had consistently gotten better each season; he won five games his first year, 11 his second, and after a 13-3 regular season, he took the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006. They lost to the Indianapolis Colts 29-17 in a game that featured the first two African-American coaches ever pitted against each other in a Super Bowl. After the 2006 season, Smith signed a new four-year contract worth $22 million.
