Liberal Republican Senator owned this house

United States Senator (Kentucky) John Sherman Cooper owned this house in 1967. He served the people of Kentucky for more than 20 years. Cooper was a liberal Republican known for his fierce independence. During a time when it was not popular, Cooper was one of the first Republicans in the Senate to renounce Senator (Wisconsin) Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist hearings. He also worked to limit U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Cooper was U.S. Ambassador to India (1955 to 1956) and East Germany (1974 to 1976). He passed away in 1991.
