"Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" photographer owned this house
by BlockShopper Historian published Dec. 29, 2009
San Francisco Chronicle photographer Joseph Rosenthal owned this house in 1961. On February 23, 1945 he took one of the most iconic photographs of all-time. On the summit of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, Rosenthal discovered and photographed a group of U.S. Marines preparing to raise the American flag after an intense battle for the island. Rosenthal's photo is the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography (1945) in the same year it was taken. He worked at the San Francisco Chronicle from 1945 until he retired in 1981. Rosenthal passed away in 2006.
